International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022

Congress Subject:  Mountains Matter – Ideas to Action | Building Alliances for Resilient Mountains

Based on United Nations decision to declare 2022 “International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development”, NatureFriends Greece will organize a congress entitled “Mountains Matter – Ideas to Actions – Building Alliances for Resilient Mountains”

The congress will take place in Kalavryta Peloponnese, November 11-13, 2022.

Organizer: Nature Friends Greece.

Co-organizer: Association of Mountain Climbing – Skiing – Kalavryta Environment Protection

Sponsorship: Municipality of Kalavryta.

Funding: Green Fund / Ministry of Environment and Energy

Nature Friends Greece is part of Naturefriends International (1895) and it has developed actions for the promotion and increase of sustainable tourism as well as for the promotion of 17SDGs -Agenda 2030.

In Greece this matter has very little worried the involved partners (Producers, Local Authorities, Tourism Enterprises, NGOs etc.).

At this time (continuity of Covid Pandemic and under the fear of more contagious viruses) it is expected that more people will visit our countryside and more specifically the mountains that have not yet been affected by super tourism.

The increase in the number of people visiting the mountains, the outdoors entertainment, mountain sports and the accidents caused, countryside neglection, the decrease and ageing of mountainous population, the local businesses, the pollution and rubbish in the mountains are some of the issues that must be discussed.

The congress will take place in Kalavryta on November 11-13, 2022.

The congress program needs to be confirmed. However, speeches, collaboration with local agents, visits to historic, production and natural sites will be included.

The Congress aims at:

To contribute to sustainable development and responsible tourism at mountainous areas.
To bring involved agents together (Tourism agents, Local authorities, Producers, Local citizens organizations, special scientists etc.)
To present case studies (good and bad practices).
To contribute to a case study for the Kalavryta area which will involve the natural, historic and cultural heritage, the local products, the outdoors recreation, trekking and mountain sports, the rich biodiversity etc.

Detailed Congress Program – Participation:

The final congress program is under planning and it will be revealed at https://mountains-matters.gr/
